University Hospital Ulm
In Germany, the BloodGen project is based at the University Hospital Ulm, Department of Transfusion Medicine, located in the Institute
Ulm of the German Red Cross Blood Donation Service Baden-Württemberg - Hessen.
The German team in Ulm:
Prof. Dr. med. Willy A. Flegel
The department provides the full scope of blood group serology for the patients of the University Hospital Ulm. It is also a reference laboratory for the hospitals served in the area of Württemberg and performs the blood group typing for the donors at the Institute Ulm.
Since 1993 the department has been headed by Prof. Dr. Flegel (Transfusion Medicine and Immunology, University of Ulm). The department has an extensive record on international research collaborations. International researchers
and postgraduate students have been working in Dr. Flegel’s laboratory. The work of the group has been published in over
70 contributions to internationally renowned journals in the area of transfusion medicine, molecular biology and immunology focusing in the recent years on blood group genes and Rhesus antigens.
Dr. Flegel is sitting on the Editorial Board of Transfusion. He is member
of the ISBT Committee on Terminology for Red Cell Surface Antigens, member of
the ISBT Rare Donor Working Party, Membre d'honneur of the Association Suisse de
Médecine Transfusionnelle (ASMT) and founder and coordinator of the German Rare
Donor Working Program.
Dr. rer. nat. Ingeborg von Zabern
Dr. von. Zabern is a biochemist and senior physician in transfusion medicine.
She has been participating in the BloodGen Project since January 2005 after
joining the Department of Transfusion Medicine at the University Hospital Ulm.
Her main task within the BloodGen Project is the organization of the
preclinical study (work package 4). Her previous research interests have been
the biochemistry of the serum complement system and transfusion reactions.
